Today is Arbor day, that might not mean anything to you, but to me, it’s one of my favorite holidays. If you are sitting there, wondering what Arbor day is, it is the celebration of trees. It started way back in 1872 in Nebraska, all due to a wonderful man named Julius Sterling Morton. Technically Canada doesn’t celebrate Arbor Day, but still what a wonderful day, what kind of world would we be without trees? Some of my fondest memories as a kid were climbing up trees so high I was afraid to come down, then getting my parents to slowly coax me down, building lame-o tree forts. My good friend Andy’s favorite tree memory was when he was a kid, he got his frisbee stuck in a tree. Not just any ordinary tree, but a 100 foot tall tree. Val, our school secretary was trying to ruin my festive mood and told me her favorite memory was cutting them down at Christmas. Before I close off today, I would like to bring forth a quote from Mr. Morton himself. “Other holidays repose upon the past; Arbor Day proposes for the future.”
Happy Arbor Day.
